Certainly, from the perspective of creative aspects, glamour, or high risk / high reward economics many parallels can be drawn between Hollywood and Gamedev. But with its dependence on evolving technology, video games industry is arguably much more a โ€œtrue industryโ€ than the Hollywood ever was. Challenges of technology enabled companies โ€“ poor quality, missed deadlines, technical debt, runaway complexity โ€“ are troubling game development studios as well. Yet, the gamedev community is skeptical about the recipes and practices used by โ€œless creativeโ€ industries. Sometimes for good reasons. Sometimes just because of the long track of ignoring the delivery challenges, favoring unconstraint creative processes over the discipline of project or technology management. But is really the โ€œshowโ€ more important than โ€œbusinessโ€?
We believe that the most successful companies in gamedev achieve balance between โ€œshowโ€ and โ€œbusinessโ€, implementing a creative discipline which is not a โ€œlowest common denominatorโ€ compromise. And yes, a lot of this discipline can be founded on agile principles. And no, implementing SCRUM is not all it takes.
